چکیده

Cortical neurons in vivo show a highly irregular spontaneous discharge activity, characterized by a gamma statistics and coefficient of variation around unity. Modelling studies showed that this irregularity is a consequence of the high-conductance state caused by the ongoing activity in the cortical network. Here, we investigate to which extent this high discharge variability can be reproduced in vitro using current noise injection. In agreement with numerical studies, we found that equalizing the time constant of the noisy input with the membrane time constant may lead to an irregular discharge activity which, however, departs from a gamma statistics. r 2004 Elsevier B.V. Channel noise from both slow adaptation currents and fast currents is required to explain spike-response variability in a sensory neuron.

Spike-timing variability has a large effect on neural information processing. However, for many systems little is known about the noise sources causing the spike-response variability. Here we investigate potential sources of spike-response variability in auditory receptor neurons of locusts, a classic insect model system. At low-spike frequencies, our data show negative interspike-interval (ISI...

In vivo Conditions Induce Faithful Encoding of Stimuli by Reducing Nonlinear Synchronization in Vestibular Sensory Neurons

Previous studies have shown that neurons within the vestibular nuclei (VN) can faithfully encode the time course of sensory input through changes in firing rate in vivo. However, studies performed in vitro have shown that these same VN neurons often display nonlinear synchronization (i.e. phase locking) in their spiking activity to the local maxima of sensory input, thereby severely limiting th...

Robust gamma oscillations in networks of inhibitory hippocampal interneurons.

Recent experiments suggest that inhibitory networks of interneurons can synchronize the neuronal discharge in in vitro hippocampal slices. Subsequent theoretical work has shown that strong synchronization by mutual inhibition is only moderately robust against neuronal heterogeneities in the current drive, provided by activation of metabotropic glutamate receptors. In vivo neurons display greate...

Variability and correlated noise in the discharge of neurons in motor and parietal areas of the primate cortex.

We analyzed the magnitude and interneuronal correlation of the variability in the activity of single neurons that were recorded simultaneously using a multielectrode array in the primary motor cortex and parietal areas 2/5 in rhesus monkeys. The animals were trained to move their arms in one of eight directions as instructed by a visual target. The relationship between variability (SD) and mean...

Field Measurements of Velocity and Physical Parameters of Seawater and Numerical Modeling of Brine Discharge from the Desalination Plant in the Southeastern Coast of Kish Island-Iran

Abstract Temperature, salinity, water-level and current speed around brine outflow of desalination site in the Southeastern Coast of Kish Island is investigated. The dominant current is east-west tidal current with a weak residual current which affects current field partially southward. The brine discharge driven hypersaline pollution dispersion is simulated applying MIKE 21, considering thr...
